Teaching Assistant roles have come to the fore in the last couple of years and are now an integral part of the classroom. You will now find that Teaching Assistants operate in most schools.
As a Teaching Assistant your role will be extremely varied as you will need to support both the teacher and the pupils in different ways. One minute you can be doing administrative tasks to aid the teacher, the next minute you could be doing spelling with a small group of children. There may even be occasions when you need to provide one-to-one help with children with learning difficulties.
This can be a hugely rewarding career as you see the results of your input when children achieve their full potential. You can also choose whether to work in a primary or secondary school and also opt to target specialist subjects such as literacy or numeracy.
Please note – You do not require any previous classroom experience or qualifications prior to doing this course.
Qualifications
On successful completion of the course you will receive two certifications:
- NCFE Level 3 Teaching Assistant Certificate
- Teaching Assistant Diploma
The NCFE Level 3 Certificate is independently endorsed as equivalent to level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (GCSE's are at levels 1 and 2 and A Levels are at level 3).

Qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland recognise NCFE as an awarding body. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland and the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales.

Study Details
You Teaching Assistant course is made up of 9 core study modules which have sub-categories within them.
Assessment method
When you complete each study module you will be required to complete an assignment which should be submitted to your personal tutor for assessment. By submitting your assignments to your tutor, your progress is continually monitored and the tutor is able to provide you with feedback and assistance throughout your studies.
Study Options
Distance learning is meant to provide students with flexibility and Home Learning Course wants your learning experience to be as convenient as possible. Therefore, we are able to offer two methods of study:
- Traditional paper-based learning (via the post)
- Online learning (all materials exchanged electronically)
Based on previous students’ experiences, we anticipate that it will take the average student approximately 162 hours to complete the course.
